Before covering the subject of independence, I would be remiss not to include information on America’s most famous pro-independence pamphleteer, Thomas Paine. This lesson tackles some of Paine’s background, his ideas, and the chief arguments in his famous tract Common Sense.

The pamphlet truly became a sensation, making the case for independence in a manner that struck a chord with the typical American. Without holding public office, Paine’s famous diatribe influenced the course of history and helped pave the way to independence.
