Tenth Amendment Center: Trump Must Back Iraq Withdrawal Promise With Action

Image
...from Tenth Amendment Center Earlier this month, while meeting with the Iraqi Prime Minister, President Trump reaffirmed his intent to remove all US troops from Iraq. “We were there and now we’re getting out. We’ll be leaving shortly,” the president told reporters at the time. Although President Obama should never have sent US troops back into Iraq in 2016, it is definitely well past time to remove them as quickly as possible. Over the weekend, the Administration announced it would be drawing down troops currently in Iraq from 5,200 to 3,500. That’s a good start. One big roadblock to finally leaving Iraq alone is President Trump’s  de facto  Secretary of War, Mike Pompeo. Although he’s supposed to be the top US diplomat, Pompeo is a bull in a china shop. He seems determined to start a war with Iran, China, Russia, Venezuela, and probably a few more countries. Unfortunately there is a pattern in this Administration where President Trump announces the withdrawal of troops from o

Tenth Amendment Center: Fed Shifts Inflation Policy to Steal More of Your Wealth

Image
...from Tenth Amendment Center The Federal Reserve has doubled down on its policy of devaluing your money. During a speech in Jackson Hole last week, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell announced a shift in the central bank’s inflation policy. In the past, the central bank has targeted a 2 percent inflation rate as measured by CPI. Now it will follow a policy of “average inflation targeting.” In effect, the Fed will allow the CPI to run “moderately” over 2 percent “for some time” to balance out periods where it runs under that level. “Many find it counterintuitive that the Fed would want to push up inflation. However, inflation that is persistently too low can pose serious risks to the economy,” Powell said during prepared remarks at the summit. The notion that falling prices are bad for the economy is ridiculous to begin with and is nothing more than Keynesian claptrap. But when you define inflation correctly – as an expansion of the money supply – it is anything but “too l

Tenth Amendment Center: More Regulation Does Not Necessarily Mean More Safety

Image
...from Tenth Amendment Center A lot of people accept regulations because they think they’re making them safer. This isn’t necessarily true. No outbreaks of foodborne illnesses have been traced to small businesses operating outside of regulatory structures in states with “food freedom” laws. Meanwhile, we see all kinds of outbreaks traced to big corporate food producers operating under strict FDA regulations and monitoring. A lot of people believe the FDA is "protecting" us from foodborne illnesses. But it's probably the other way around. @mmaharrey10th pic.twitter.com/NJLZVRKjzv — TenthAmendmentCenter (@TenthAmendment) August 27, 2020 For Further Reading Status Report: Nullifying FDA Regulations Report: Food Freedom Flourishes in Three States with Government Regulators Out of the Way Congress Broke the Meat Supply Chain 50 Years Ago Corporate Egg Producers Partner with Feds to Stomp Out Vegan Mayo Mike Maharrey August 31, 2020 at 07:25AM

Tenth Amendment Center: You Can’t Trust Federal Judges to Protect Your Rights

Image
...from Tenth Amendment Center Most people obsess over the Supreme Court because they imagine that if they can get the “right” judges, the Court will protect their rights. But there’s a big problem with that strategy. Tenth Amendment Center: Lawless Law Enforcement: Asset Forfeiture Fuels Police Spending

Tenth Amendment Center: Who Will Win in 2020?

Image
...from Tenth Amendment Center Who will win the 2020 presidential election? Joe Biden? Donald Trump? Who cares? Because it doesn’t really matter. Regardless of who wins in November, when their term ends in January 2024, the federal government will be bigger, more intrusive and deeper in debt. And there will be countless additional violations of the Constitution over the next four years. I’d put money on it. I quit concerning myself with presidential elections years ago when I started using the Constitution as my measuring stick. Neither candidate can measure up. When it comes to the Constitution, there is very little difference between a George Bush, a Barack Obama, a Donald Trump, or a Joe Biden. In reality, there would likely be very little substantive difference between a Trump and a Biden administration – just like there wasn’t much substantive difference between the Trump and Obama years. Presidential politics is mostly rhetoric and posturing. We can change out the occ

Tenth Amendment Center: Interview: Abusing the Commerce Clause

Image
...from Tenth Amendment Center The commerce clause is used to justify federal intrusion into virtually every facet of economic life. But that was not what the founders intended. Suzanne Sherman and I talked about the commerce clause on a recent episode of the Wasatch Report. We talked about what the commerce meant at the time of the founding and what it has become and how the federal government abuses to expand its power. Along the way, we talk about federal regulation of meat and other foods. But it’s not all gloom and doom. We also talk about the path forward to food freedom. Tenth Amendment Center: Sell the Postal Service!

Image
...from Tenth Amendment Center The United States Postal Service – formerly the Post Office — is an American institution rooted in the Constitution. To the framers, the idea that the federal government would be in the thankless business of carrying mail from city to city defied their Madisonian ideas of limited government. But they feared that rival states would take over delivery of the mails. So, they reluctantly made it a federal apparatus. In an era with slow communication, and before the invention of the telegraph or telephone, the use of the mails was the only effective way to pay a bill without cash, transmit a document or send a letter. In the 1840s, a gifted philosopher-businessman, Lysander Spooner, founded the American Letter Mail Company. It delivered mail between Washington, D.C., and Boston for significantly less than what the Post Office charged. When the federal government challenged its right to compete with the Post Office, the courts held that even though the Con

Tenth Amendment Center: Private Company Builds National License Plate Tracking System for Cops

Image
...from Tenth Amendment Center My heart sank when CNN  reported that Flock Safety had created a national license plate tracking program. Flock Safety’s business model has been profiting from peoples’ fears about crime for years . Flock Safety has turned fear and suspicion into a national business model, where anyone and everyone is a suspect. “Flock Safety, which makes a license plate reader, announced the  Total Analytics Law Officers Network , or TALON. The network looks to connect the 400 law enforcement agencies using its cameras, allowing agencies that opt in to view camera data from other regions.”  Flock Safety, once relegated to tracking vehicle license plates in America’s  white-collar neighborhoods , has now gone national. “The company said it has cameras in 700 cities, essentially creating a nationwide camera network for tracking car movements if they’re all connected.”  It is hard to put into words how disgusted I feel about private corporations using fear to j

Tenth Amendment Center: Qualified Immunity Won’t be Ended by the Federal Courts

Tenth Amendment Center: The Police State’s War on Weed and Backyard Gardens

Image
...from Tenth Amendment Center “They came again this morning at about 8:00 o’clock. A large cargo-type helicopter flew low over the cabin, shaking it on its very foundations. It shook all of us inside, too. I feel frightened … I see how helpless and tormented I am becoming with disgust and disillusionment with the government which has turned this beautiful country into a police state …  I feel like I am in the middle of a war zone .” -Journal entry from a California resident describing the government’s aerial searches for marijuana plants Backyard gardeners, beware: tomato plants have become collateral damage in the government’s war on drugs, especially marijuana. In fact, merely growing a vegetable garden on your own property, or in a greenhouse on your property, or  shopping at a gardening store  for gardening supplies—incredibly enough—could set you up for a drug raid  sanctioned by the courts . It’s happened before. After shopping for hydroponic tomatoes at their local ga

Tenth Amendment Center: Another Abusive Cop Walks With Qualified Immunity

Image
...from Tenth Amendment Center If you’re hoping recent high-profile cases of police misconduct will spur federal courts to roll back qualified immunity, you’re going to be disappointed. I recently reported on a federal district court judge in Mississippi who blasted qualified immunity , calling it an “invented doctrine” to protect law enforcement officers from having to face any consequences for wrongdoing. He then proceeded to grant qualified immunity to a Mississippi cop who engaged in an illegal search, saying “this Court is required to apply the law as stated by the Supreme Court.” Today I bring you yet another example of qualified immunity in action and an abusive cop walking away without any repercussions. According to court documents , Butler County, Iowa, Sheriff’s Office Deputy Bruce Tierney kneed Charles McManemy in the face 20 to 30 times after he was already restrained by four other officers. McManemy claims the incident caused permanent damage to his eye. This case
